Sailor Moon SuperS dolls - 1995

In 1995 Bandai marketed a set of Usagi dolls in various outfits. With the street clothes dolls, each Usagi came in a different outfit. Accessories included shoes, a tiara and stand. These outfits were also sold separately in the SuperS Coordinate doll clothes, two with slight modification. The Sailormoon doll was a Henshin verison with a removable collar, bow and skirt. These dolls were limited in production and approximately 500 of each was made and sold.

What is a company to do after it has been selling the same dolls for 2 years? Give them a gimmick! Welcome the Henshi (transformation) dolls. Bandai release these larger box sets of a 10 1/2" Moon and 8" Chibimoon. It was a cute idea. The bows and skirts of their fighting fukus detach and new skirts, collars and accessories can be added to give your doll a new look. These dolls featured the same hollow body, arms and legs, which are semi-poseable.

Okay, Bandai had to go ahead and release new versions of the Inner Senshi. The face molds are slightly different. Mercury finally got a more realistic hair style and Tuxedo Mask also got a better hair style. His face still leaves much to be desired. Once again they are 10 1/2" (Tux is 11"), hollow body, arms and legs. The star of this set is the Excellent Team Sailor Saturn doll. She is 8" tall and beautifully detailed. Standard body, arms and legs.

The only villain dolls produced by Bandai Japan, the Amazoness Quartet are extremely cute 8" dolls. They consist of the hollow bodies, arms and legs, but are well detailed.

With the success of the talking Sailormoon doll from 1994 and with so many versions of the Inner Senshi dolls available from the past two seasons, Bandai apparently decided on a novelty idea and released talking versions of the Inner Senshi and Chibimoon. These dolls are 11" tall. The bodies are solid to accommodate the speaker and battery. The arms are more solid, but not poseable as in past dolls. These dolls do have bendable legs. To date, these dolls have the prettiest face molds and hair styles.

Warning - if you have any of these dolls, you should carefully unpackage them and remove the battery. Over time, the battery will corrode, ruining your doll and packaging.

Part way through the SuperS season, the inner senshi were given power-ups and so their costumes changed. Bandai released the dolls with their newer outfits and wands. Never fear, though, if you had purchased the first set of talking dolls and didn't want to buy another set, you could purchase their crystal power fukus separately.
